- Who is Louise, and how do you know the owner of the recipe box is named Louise?
Louise was the owner of an old library card catalog drawer full of recipes that I bought at a thrift store. In the drawer, there several half bank deposit slips with her and her husband’s name with a P.O. box. - Are there any markings on the recipe box?
There is no maker’s mark on the box, but there are scuff marks where you can tell something was sitting on it. - What made you buy the box?
I used to work in a library, and I love books. I kind of miss card catalogs from my Kindergarten days, so when I saw this small, old card catalog sitting on a low coffee table at a thrift store, I power-walked to it for inspection. I was expecting an empty drawer and would buy it for aesthetic appeal and small storage space. Then, I opened the drawer…and JACKPOT. Images from National Treasure, Indiana Jones, and Tomb Raider flashed through my mind. My imagination was peaked, and I was completely (and dramatically) in love. I was not leaving the store without it. (It cost about $20.)
PS- Thanks, Mom! - Why does this matter so much to you?
I don’t know Louise, yet she has touched my life. I wonder what she’d think about this. She is an exciting puzzle- a spirit in my kitchen, always in the back of my mind when I’m preparing meals for my family. Our meeting was odd; I stumbled across Louise through a box at a thrift store. It’s every thrift store hunter’s dream to stumble over something so precious and valuable, and you can tell an item was precious and valuable to someone else. I have so much that I want to say about Louise. So much I want to ask about- questions I know that will never be answered. But more importantly, there’s so much I want to SHARE. I want to share how an object connects people. I want to share the joy I see she had in these recipes.
